The month of Sawan is considered highly auspicious and powerful in Hindu tradition. It is entirely dedicated to Lord Shiva, and it is believed that the pujas, spiritual practices, and mantra chanting done during this month yield thousands of times more benefits than on regular days. Mondays of this month, especially the first one, are believed to be the most powerful time to invite Lord Shiva’s blessings.
In Sanatan Dharma, Lord Shiva is not just known as the destroyer but also as the deity of healing, liberation, and compassion. He is the three-eyed Yogi who can halt death, calm diseases, and free his devotees from fear. According to mythology, after traversing the three realms, Lord Shiva comes here to rest at night. It is said that this is the only temple on earth where Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati play a divine game of dice (chaupar) every night. After the evening shayan aarti (ritual before sleep), the chaupar board is laid out inside the sanctum, which is then sealed. Remarkably, though no one enters the inner sanctum at night, the dice board is always found disturbed in the morning, which adds to the mystical and spiritual aura of the temple. This unique occurrence enhances the temple’s spiritual significance. That is why darshan and worship at Omkareshwar are considered especially important after visiting all other pilgrimages.
