Kalashtami marks the birth of Baba Kaal Bhairav, the fierce form of Lord Shiva who controls the cycle of time and protects devotees from evil forces. According to the Puranas, Lord Shiva took the form of Kaal Bhairav to destroy the pride of Lord Brahma. In his fierce form, he severed one of Brahma’s heads, an act that symbolized the destruction of ego. To atone for this sin, Kaal Bhairav undertook the Kapala Bhiksha, wandering with Brahma’s skull in his hand, a journey of deep repentance and humility. When the skull finally fell from his hand in Kashi, he was freed from the sin of Brahma-hatya. From that moment, Kashi became his eternal abode, and he was declared the Kotwal (Divine Guardian) of Kashi, the one who watches over the sacred city and its devotees.

Kaal Bhairav severed Brahma's fifth head, but the head refused to leave his hand. Lord Shiva then told Kaal Bhairav, “You are now burdened with the sin of Brahmahatya (killing a Brahmin).
