The significance of Vat Purnima stems from the legendary tale of Savitri and Satyavan, as told in the Mahabharata. Savitri, a devoted and wise princess, chose to marry Satyavan, a nobleman doomed to die within a year.
Undeterred by fate, she stood by him. On the destined day, when Lord Yama, the god of death, came to claim Satyavanās soul, Savitri followed him with unwavering devotion and intelligence. Moved by her steadfast love and spiritual strength, Yama offered her boons. With divine wisdom, Savitri requested a hundred sons through Satyavan, compelling Yama to restore his life to fulfill the boon. Thus, this act of courage and commitment of Savitri made her a symbol of ideal womanhood and marital devotion, and Vat Purnima became the day when women tie sacred threads around the Banyan tree, emulating Savitri and praying for their husband's well-being and longevity.
