There are two lingas here- Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar- worshipped together as one. The temple derives its power from the primordial sound ‘Om’, believed to have originated here from the mouth of Brahma. Even the sacred Narmada River flows here in the shape of ‘Om’.
As per scriptures, a single darshan of this Jyotirlinga is said to absolve one of accumulated sins. According to Puranic legends, this is the only temple where Lord Shiva is said to rest every night, playing dice with Goddess Parvati- a divine act reenacted by the daily placement and disturbance of the game board in the sanctum.
