According to religious legends, King Mandhata, a descendant of Lord Rama, was a devoted worshipper of Lord Shiva. He used to regularly visit Kedarnath and offer khichdi to Lord Shiva. Following Lord Shiva’s command, he also performed intense penance in Varanasi. As a result of his penance, Lord Shiva manifested in the form of a Shiva Lingam made of khichdi, which came to be known as Gauri Kedareshwar.
This Shiva Lingam in Kashi is composed of two parts, symbolizing Hari-Har. It is believed that this Lingam embodies the presence of Gauri, Kedareshwar, Mahavishnu, and Mahalakshmi, along with Goddess Annapurna, since it originated from khichdi.
