One of the most sacred spots in Kashi is the Pishach Mochan Kund. It is believed that performing the Pitru Dosha Nivaran Puja here helps fulfill the unfulfilled desires of ancestors and grants them liberation. According to ancient legends, King Bhagirath performed intense penance at this site to bring Maa Ganga to Earth for the liberation of his ancestors. Pleased with his devotion, Maa Ganga agreed to descend, but her powerful flow could have destroyed the Earth. To prevent this, Lord Shiva held Ganga in his matted locks (jata) and gently released her onto the land through Mount Kailash, thus saving the Earth and granting Bhagirath’s ancestors salvation.
It is also believed that the very rock where King Bhagirath meditated, known as Bhagirath Shila, still exists at Gangotri. Devotees believe that performing rituals and offering prayers at the Ganga Ghat of Gangotri Dham, especially on auspicious days like Ekadashi, brings Maa Ganga’s divine blessings.
