The Rahu Paithani Temple in Uttarakhand is one of the few temples in India dedicated to the worship of Rahu. According to mythology, Rahu and Ketu are parts of the asura Swarbhanu’s body. During the churning of the ocean, Swarbhanu deceitfully drank the nectar while sitting with the gods. Lord Vishnu then cut his head off with the Sudarshan Chakra so he would not become immortal. However, having tasted the nectar, Swarbhanu became immortal. His upper body became Rahu, and his lower body became Ketu.
It is believed that Rahu’s severed head fell in the Paithani village of Pauri, where the temple now stands.
