He and his parents crafted a Shivling from sand at the confluence of the Ganges and Gomti Rivers and began worshiping Lord Shiva with deep devotion.
When Markandeya turned 14, Yamraj (the god of death) came to take his soul. At that moment, he was immersed in Shiva worship. As Yamraj approached, Lord Shiva manifested in divine form, and Yamraj was forced to retreat in His presence. Lord Shiva then declared that Markandeya would remain immortal, and that Markandeya’s worship would be honoured even before His own. Since that divine incident, this sacred site has been worshipped as a powerful kshetra of Lord Shiva and His eternal devotee, Markandeya. It is believed that anyone who chants the Markandey Mahadev Mantra at this temple receives Lord Shiva’s special blessings. Performing the Yam Dand Mukti Pujan and Ayushya Homa at this temple is also considered highly auspicious, especially on a Monday. Just as Lord Shiva blessed Markandeya with eternal youth and divine protection, the Ayushya Homa is performed to invoke blessings for good health and protection from untimely death.
