As per sacred legends, King Mandhata of Lord Rama’s lineage was a devout worshipper of Lord Shiva. He regularly visited Kedarnath and offered khichdi to the Lord. Following Lord Shiva’s command, he also performed intense penance in Varanasi. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Shiva manifested in the form of a Shivling made from khichdi, which came to be known as Gauri Kedareshwar.
The Shivling in Kashi is unique, formed of two parts symbolizing Hari-Hara (the union of Vishnu and Shiva). It is believed that this Shivling embodies the presence of Goddess Gauri, Kedareshwar, Lord Mahavishnu, Goddess Mahalakshmi, and even Goddess Annapurna — the latter’s presence being attributed to its khichdi origin.
