The Rahu Paithani Temple in Uttarakhand is one of the rare temples where Rahu is worshipped along with Lord Shiva. According to mythology, Rahu and Ketu are parts of the demon Swarbhanu. During the Samudra Manthan, Swarbhanu deceitfully drank the nectar of immortality. On learning this, Lord Vishnu severed his head using the Sudarshan Chakra. Due to consuming nectar, the demon became immortal. The lower part became Ketu, and the severed head became Rahu. It is believed that the severed head fell at this very place in Pauri, where the temple now stands.
