When their son, Markandeya, learned about his destined short life, he immersed himself in the worship of Lord Shiva and began chanting the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra. On his 16th birthday, as Yama (the god of death) came to claim his soul, Markandeya clung to a Shivalinga and called out to Lord Shiva. Moved by his unwavering devotion, Lord Shiva appeared, defeated Yama, and blessed His devotee with long life. This story makes the temple a symbol of protection and longevity. As soon as Markandeya turned 14, Yamaraj came to take him. At that moment, Markandeya was absorbed in his worship of Lord Shiva.
