🔱 When Lord Shiva Himself granted the boon of longevity to His devotee
According to legend, Sage Mrigashringa and his wife Suvrata were devotedly performing penance for a child. Pleased with their devotion, Lord Shiva blessed them with a son, but also revealed that the child would only live for 16 years. When the child, Markandeya, learned of his short life span, he began intense devotion to Lord Shiva and chanted the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra. On his 16th birthday, when Yama (god of death) came to take his soul, Markandeya clung to the Shiva Linga and called upon Lord Shiva. Moved by his devotion, Lord Shiva appeared, defeated Yama, and granted Markandeya a long life.
