According to the mythological story, during the churning of the ocean, the demon Swarbhanu deceitfully drank the Amrit (nectar of immortality), seeing which Lord Vishnu cut off his head with the Sudarshan Chakra. It is believed that where Swarbhanu's head fell, this temple was established. This head was called 'Rahu'. In this temple, the headless idol of Rahu is seated along with Lord Shiva.
