Karthigai Maha Deepam is one of the major Shiva festivals of South India, celebrated in the month of Kartigai (According to the Tamil calendar), which corresponds to Margashirsha in the North Indian calendar. In Tamil Nadu and Kerala, this festival is celebrated in a manner similar to Diwali, with special prayers held in temples across both states. It is primarily dedicated to Lord Shiva, and people light lamps at home to drive away negative energy while inviting positive energy and prosperity. The grand celebration of Karthigai Maha Deepam takes place at the Arunachaleswarar Swami Temple in Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu. On this day, millions of devotees gather atop a hill at the temple to light a massive lamp, the Maha Deepam, which symbolizes Lord Shiva's divine light. The main legend behind this festival is about Lord Shiva's appearance as a Jyotirlinga (fire pillar) during the beginning of creation. Vishnu and Brahma were in a competition to prove their superiority. A divine voice told them that the one who could find the beginning or end of the lingam would be superior.
Vishnu, in his Varaha form, dug into the earth to find the beginning, while Brahma, in the form of a swan, flew into the sky to find the end. Neither succeeded, but Brahma, fearing defeat, falsely claimed to have found the end of the lingam. Shiva, angered by Brahma’s lie, caused the Jyotirlinga to take a fierce form, resulting in a commotion in the universe. Upon the gods' request for forgiveness, the Fire Pillar was established as the Arunachaleswarar Lingam on Tirumallai Mountain.
