According to the holy Bhagavata Purana, the people of Vrindavan were preparing to worship Devraj Indra (the King of Gods) to seek rain and prosperity. However, Lord Shri Krishna, in His divine wisdom, taught them that their true source of life and nourishment was the mountain, Govardhan Parvat, which provided their grazing land and water. When the villagers obeyed Lord Shri Krishna and performed Govardhan Puja instead of Indra's, a furious Indra sent a terrifying storm of heavy rain and thunder. To save the people and their cattle from the deluge, the little Lord Shri Krishna simply lifted the massive Govardhan Parvat on His little finger, holding it up as a divine umbrella for seven days.
