Responding to the prayers of the devotees, Lord Shiva caught Ganga in his matted locks, thus controlling her flow. After this, she descended gradually to the earth through Kailash and liberated Bhagirath’s ancestors. Due to Bhagirath’s efforts, the Ganga that flows from Gaumukh is also called Bhagirathi. After flowing for a distance, when it merges with the Alaknanda River at Devprayag, it is then known as the Ganga.
