At this Rahu temple located in Uttarakhand, Rahu is worshipped along with Lord Shiva. This is one of the rare temples in the country where Rahu is worshipped together with Lord Shiva. It is believed that Rahu and Ketu are parts of the body of the asura Swarbhanu. According to a Puranic legend, during the Samudra Manthan, Swarbhanu deceitfully sat among the devas and consumed Amrit. When Lord Vishnu realized the deception, He severed Swarbhanu’s head from his body with the Sudarshan Chakra to prevent him from becoming fully immortal. However, since Swarbhanu had already consumed Amrit, he became immortal. The lower part of Swarbhanu’s body became Ketu, while the severed head became Rahu. It is believed that this severed head fell at this very place in Pauri, which later came to be known as the Rahu Temple.
It is believed that people visit this Rahu temple to seek relief from various doshas caused by Rahu. Specifically, worship is performed here to overcome Kaal Sarp Dosh and Rahu–Ketu Dosh and to gain relief from Rahu Mahadasha. Some texts mention that this temple was established by Adi Shankaracharya. Another legend states that the Pandavas constructed this temple during their Swargarohini journey. To protect themselves from Rahu dosha, the Pandavas worshipped Lord Shiva and Rahu at this very temple.
