Shraadh Paksha is considered the most auspicious time for the peace of ancestors’ souls. According to the scriptures, during Pitru Paksha, our forefathers descend from Pitru Loka to Earth, and by performing Shraadh, Tarpan, and Pind Daan, their descendants please them and receive blessings. Each date of Pitru Paksha has its own unique significance, and among them, Pitru Chaturthi is considered highly sacred. On this day, at the holy shrines of Gangotri and Yamunotri, Narayan Bali, Naag Bali, and Yama Dand Mukti Puja will be performed — the final opportunity of this year.
🪔 The Story of Pitru Paksha:
Many legends are associated with Pitru Paksha, one of which goes back to the Mahabharata era. After Karna left his mortal body, he reached heaven, where he was given gold and jewels but no food. Surprised, Karna asked Indra the reason, to which Indra replied that while Karna donated throughout his life, he never offered food or Tarpan to his ancestors. Indra then granted him 15 days on Earth to perform Shraadh rituals for his forefathers. These 15 days are known as Pitru Paksha or Shraadh.
💫 Special Ritual at Yamunotri Dham:
Narayan Bali and Naag Bali Puja hold special significance at Yamunotri Dham. These rituals are performed by learned Brahmins for the removal of Pitru Dosha and Naag Dosha. Narayan Bali Puja is conducted for blessings and peace of departed ancestors, while Naag Bali Puja helps in overcoming the negative effects of serpent curses. Yamunotri is also significant for Yama’s blessings since Yamuna Devi is Yama’s sister. It is believed that these rituals bring peace to ancestors’ souls and lead the family toward prosperity.

The Ganga Dudh Abhishek at Gangotri Dham is an extremely holy ritual, especially fruitful during Pitru Paksha. In this Abhishek, the deity of Ganga or a Shivling is bathed with milk, ghee, honey, curd, and Gangajal. It is believed to reduce sins and grant merit. This ritual invokes Maa Ganga’s grace, blessing families with better mental and physical health, and has the power to bring changes in life.
