According to scriptures, after emerging from the Samudra Manthan (churning of the cosmic ocean), Lord Dhanvantari sought a place from Lord Vishnu. Vishnu told him that he had arrived a little late, but blessed him with a divine boon that he would incarnate in the royal lineage in the second Dvapara Yuga and be worshipped across the three worlds.
As per this boon, in the second Dvapara Yuga, Lord Dhanvantari incarnated in Kashi as the son of King Kash. Later, under Rishi Bharadwaja, he studied Ayurveda, classified it into eight branches, and acquired vast knowledge of medical treatments, showing the world the divine path of wellness. This special puja is performed to bring blessings of good health, protection, and relief from illnesses for the entire family.

It is believed that the sound of “Om” was first uttered from the mouth of Brahma, the creator. Even Vedic recitation cannot begin without Om.
