Vaikunta Ekadashi is celebrated as the most sacred of all Ekadashis because the Padma Purana describes this day as the North door of Vaikunta, the divine abode of Lord Vishnu, is opened for all beings, including Gods. The scriptures say that on this day, the Lord himself gives his darshana at the entrance of Vaikunta and blesses every devotee who remembers him with devotion. The Vishnu Dharma Shastra states that observing Vaikunta Ekadashi even once destroys the weight of sins gathered over many births and brings the merit of performing a thousand Ashwamedha Yagnas.
According to the Sri Venkatachala Mahatyam, this Ekadashi is especially powerful at the temples of Lord Venkateshwara because he is the form of Vishnu who has taken the responsibility of protecting the world in Kali Yuga. The greatness of this day lies in the belief that the Lord removes the gates of karma and opens the path of Moksha. Fasting, chanting the divine names, and participating in his seva on this day are said to bring peace, prosperity, spiritual upliftment, and the grace that frees a person from difficulties. This is why the scriptures declare that there is no Ekadashi greater than Vaikunta Ekadashi.
Lord Hayagreeva is a unique form of Lord Vishnu, depicted with a human body and the head of an attractive white horse. In his four hands, he holds a conch (Shankha), a discus (Chakra), and the books of wisdom. Because of this, he is known as the God of Knowledge. Children worship him to seek blessings for their studies, to gain concentration, and to score good grades in examinations. He is considered the protector of the Vedas and the guru of Goddess Saraswati. Scholars and professionals worship him for success and clarity. Those who worship him are believed to be blessed with spiritual growth and the removal of avidya (ignorance).
Hayagreeva Puja is a sacred ritual dedicated to Lord Hayagreeva, where a divine Homam is the main process. It is also recommended to perform it three months before a student's exams. The Homam is the core ritual where prayers are carried to the deity through a consecrated fire.
The ritual begins by lighting the sacred fire in the Homa Kundam using camphor and dry wood. While chanting the Hayagreeva mantra (Jnananandamayam devam nirmala sphatikakrutim, aadharam sarvavidyaanaam Hayagreevamupasmahe), priests offer the necessary ingredients into the fire. Vedic scholars perform continuous rhythmic chanting to intensify vibrations for memory and focus. The ritual ends with a final offering (Purnahuti), where a bundle of sacred items is offered into the fire to signify completion.
