In Tripindi shraadh, three Pindas are offered for three generations: father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, made from til (sesame seeds), rice, and Kusha (Durba) grass. It is believed that this ritual satisfies the souls of ancestors and brings their delayed blessings to the family. In Pind Daan, pindas made of rice, til, flowers, and water are offered into sacred rivers or holy places. This ritual is considered very effective in Pitru Dosha Nivaran, bringing peace, happiness, and prosperity into life.
🌿 Additionally, the Tarpan performed on the 2nd day, Dwitiya Tithi, is a highly important Vedic ritual for the peace and satisfaction of the ancestors' souls. On this auspicious date, Sri Mandir will offer Tarpan at the Dharmaranya Vedi in Gaya using kusha grass, til, water, and mantras for the ancestors. It is believed that Tarpan with til satisfies the ancestors’ souls and, through their blessings, life’s obstacles begin to ease. Til Tarpan on the second day of Pitru Paksha is said to reduce the effects of Pitru Dosha, especially for those ancestors whose thithi is attached to Dwitiya, help attain liberation from the preta (spirit) realm, and invite the blessings of ancestors. This is a sacred ritual of gratitude, and this year, it’s the final opportunity to perform it.
🛕 Garuda Purana Story Related to Gaya:
Lord Brahma told Vyasji that the demon Gaya caused immense suffering to the gods and humans through his severe penance. Distressed, the gods went to Lord Vishnu, who promised to end Gaya’s life. While collecting a lotus from the Ksheer Sagar for Shiva’s worship, Gaya was mesmerized by Vishnumaya and fell asleep in Kikat Desh. At that moment, Lord Vishnu killed Gaya with his mace, bringing relief to both gods and humans. Lord Vishnu declared that Gaya’s body would now be revered as a sacred pilgrimage site. It is believed that performing Yajna, Shraadh, and Pind Daan here grants devotees the attainment of Swarg and Brahmlok.

The ancient practice of Tarpan and Pind Daan continues to this day at the Pind Vedi's near the sacred land of Gaya. According to the Skanda Purana, during the Mahabharata war, Dharmaraj Yudhishthir performed Pind Daan at the Dharmaranya Pind Vedi for the peace and atonement of the souls of those killed in battle.
