The story of the Kolhapur Mahalakshmi Shaktipeetha is deeply connected with Tirupati Kshetra. According to the legend, a sage named Bhrigu visited the Trimurthis, Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, to test who among them was the most patient and the greatest. When he arrived at Vaikunta, Lord Vishnu was resting. Feeling ignored, the sage became angry and kicked Lord Vishnu on his chest. Instead of getting angry or reacting with pride, Lord Vishnu humbly apologised to the sage and gently massaged his feet, asking whether he had hurt himself while kicking. Maa Lakshmi, who resides on the chest of Lord Vishnu, was deeply hurt by this incident. She felt humiliated that the sage had kicked the very place where she lives and that Lord Vishnu accepted it without protest. Feeling insulted and distressed, Maa Lakshmi decided to leave Vaikuntha. She descended to Earth and chose Kolhapur as her place of penance, manifesting there as Goddess Mahalakshmi.
After Maa Lakshmi left, Lord Vishnu realised the pain she had felt. Unable to bear separation from her, he too left Vaikuntha in search of Lakshmi. He came down to Earth and settled on the seven hills of Tirupati, where he took the form of Lord Venkateswara and began his penance. It is believed that a devotee’s trip to Tirupati is not truly finished until they visit the Mahalakshmi Temple in Kolhapur. First, devotees visit the husband at Tirupati, and then they seek the blessings of the wife at Kolhapur, to bring peace, prosperity, and harmony into their lives.
