The festival is closely connected to the idea of divine light. According to legend, once Brahma and Vishnu argued about who was greater. To end the dispute, Lord Shiva appeared as a huge pillar of fire, without beginning or end. Neither Brahma nor Vishnu could find the top or bottom of the flame. This story symbolises that the divine is infinite and beyond human understanding. That cosmic pillar of fire cooled upon the prayers of the gods and manifested as the sacred Arunachalam hill, the place where Shiva’s divine energy still resides. The lighting of lamps during Karthika Deepam is believed to represent that cosmic fire of Shiva.
Another important story linked to this day is the birth of Subrahmanya Swamy (also called Kartikeya). It is believed that six sparks from Lord Shiva formed six infant forms, cared for by the six stars of the Krittikas. On this day, Goddess Parvati united those six forms into one divine child, Subrahmanya Swamy, with six faces. Because of this connection, many devotees also worship Subrahmanya Swamy during the festival.
To invoke the blessings of Arunachaleshwara Swamy, a Kartika Deepam Mahotsavam will be celebrated at the Arunachalam Kshetra with the lighting of 108 lamps, accompanied by Rudrabhishek and Rudra Homam. In this puja, the sacred abhishek of the Shivlinga is performed along with the chanting of Shri Rudram, which is believed to purify negative karma and obstacles. It is said that through this sacred Homam, devotees’ prayers reach directly to Lord Arunachaleshwara. The glow of these lamps illuminates the homes, temples, and the sacred hill, bringing strength, positivity, and divine blessings into life.

According to sacred texts like the Skanda Purana, once Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma argued over who was superior. To end the debate, Lord Shiva appeared as a massive pillar of fire (Jyoti) that had no beginning or end. Vishnu took the form of a boar and dug deep into the earth, while Brahma flew upward as a swan to find the top, but both failed. This hill, Arunachala, is believed to be the solidified form of that infinite light (Jyoti Swaroopa).
Great sages like Ramana Maharshi meditated here, and it is said that merely thinking of Arunachala is equal to performing penance. The sacred Girivalam (circumambulation of the Arunachala hill) is considered highly purifying and is believed to burn away karmic burdens.
