Sankashtahara Chaturthi is a special day dedicated to Lord Ganesha, observed every month on Krishna Paksham to seek his divine blessings. The name Sankashtahara refers to “remover of difficulties.” Devotees believe that observing a fast and praying on this day helps in removing all obstacles and difficulties from one's life. The day concludes with the sighting of the moon, which symbolizes the successful completion of the fast and the arrival of peace and prosperity.
The Ganesh Vighnaharta Puja and Homam is a sacred ritual that is performed to remove obstacles from all tasks in life. Lord Ganapati is called the first-to-be-worshipped and the remover of obstacles, who resolves all the problems of his devotees. In this ritual, a homam is performed with Ganapati Abhishek, offerings of Durva-Modak, and the chanting of mantras. Offerings are made into the sacred fire while chanting Ganesh mantras, which is believed to make the atmosphere pure and spiritual, guiding devotees towards peace, success, and auspicious results. This ritual is also considered very blessed for the beginning of a new job, business, marriage, or education.
There are many stories related to the worship of Lord Ganapati on Sankashtahara Chaturthi. The most famous story associated with Sankashtahara Chaturthi is about Lord Ganesha and the Moon. Long ago, after a feast, Lord Ganesha was traveling on his mouse. Suddenly, a snake crossed their path, causing Ganesha to fall. Seeing this, the Chandra dev laughed at Ganesha’s appearance. Feeling insulted, Ganesha cursed the Chandra dev, saying that anyone who looked at him would face false accusations and bad luck. The Moon realized his mistake and prayed for forgiveness. Ganesha then softened the curse: he declared that looking at the moon is only forbidden on Ganesh Chaturthi, but praying to the Chandra dev on Sankashtahara Chaturthi would instead remove all troubles.
Since then, devotees fast on this day and look at the Moon to seek Ganesha’s blessings for a life free of obstacles.
This Vighnaharta Puja and homam is being held at the very ancient and fruitful Shri Chintaman Ganesh Temple in Ujjain, where Lord Ganesh resides in a Swayambhu form. The word Chintaman refers to the removal of Chintas.
