Ayyappa Swamy, also lovingly called Manikanta, Harihara Sutha, and Dharmashasta, as per the Puranas. Dharmashashta means ruler of Dharma. According to the Vishnu Purana, he was born from the divine union of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu in his Mohini form for the purpose of restoring peace and protecting dharma in Kaliyuga. He is worshipped as the embodiment of discipline, devotion, and inner strength. His mantra “Swamiye Sharanam Ayyappa” reminds us to surrender our worries, desires, and struggles at his feet, trusting that he will guide us. Devotees believe that worshipping Lord Ayyappa removes inner fears, breaks obstacles, and grants both material fulfilment and spiritual growth.
The sacred period of Mandala Makaravilakku Kalam holds deep spiritual value in the Ayyappa tradition. The Mandala period lasts 41 days, during which devotees follow vratham, wear the mala, practice simplicity and chant the Lord’s name. This period ends with Makaravilakku, a divine moment linked to the ancient ritual light lit at Ponnambalamedu on Makara Sankranti. Devotees believe this light represents the grace of Ayyappa and the awakening of inner purity and spiritual light.
As part of this sacred period, especially on the first day of the Year 2026, performing the Ayyappa Special Neyyabhishekam and Padi Puja holds deep significance.
Neyyabhishekam, the offering of pure ghee to the deity, symbolises purification by melting away ego, negativity, and past burdens. Just as ghee becomes pure and clear when heated, devotees believe that their lives become clearer and lighter when this offering is made with devotion. Following this, the Padi Puja is offered to the 18 sacred steps of Swamy. These steps symbolise a devotee’s spiritual ascent, leaving behind the pull of the 5 senses, overcoming the 8 inner enemies like Kama, Krodha, Lobha, Moha, Madha, Matsarya, Bhaya, Shoka, rising above the 3 gunas (Sattva, Rajas, Tamas), and finally crossing from ignorance into knowledge and devotion. Climbing these steps or offering puja to them represents the journey from worldly life to divine consciousness.
