The Panchami tithi of Kartika Masam is considered very auspicious for the worship of Lakshmi Devi. According to the Venkatachala Mahatmya and Padma Purana, Lakshmi Devi, angered with Sri Maha Vishnu for remaining silent when Sage Bhrigu kicked him on the chest, left Vaikunta and came to Earth. She performed penance in the sacred Pushkarini called Padmasarovaram for twelve years. In the thirteenth year, on Panchami tithi of Kartika Masam, she emerged from a golden lotus in the Tirupati region. She later grew up as Padmavati and married Vishnu, who had incarnated as Sri Venkateshwara Swamy. Because of this divine manifestation, worshipping Lakshmi on this day is believed to bring immense wealth, fortune, and abundance.
