As per Shiva Purana, the demon Tarakasura had three sons - Tarakaksha, Kamalaksha, and Vidyunmali. After Lord Kartikeya, the son of Lord Shiva, killed Tarakasura, his sons became furious and sought revenge. They performed intense penance to please Lord Brahma, who, though he did not grant them immortality, gave them three magnificent cities (Tripura):
A golden city for Tarakaksha,
A silver city for Kamalaksha, and
An iron city for Vidyunmali.
These cities moved across the sky and aligned in a straight line only once in a thousand years - and could only be destroyed when struck by a single arrow that pierced all three at once.
Empowered by these cities, the sons of Tarakasura began spreading tyranny and destruction across the three worlds. Terrified, the gods approached Lord Shiva for help. With divine cooperation, Lord Vishwakarma crafted a celestial chariot for Shiva, and Lord Vishnu himself took the form of an arrow. When the three cities aligned, Lord Shiva, with the help of Lord Vishnu, released a single arrow that destroyed all three, ending the reign of evil.
After this victory, the gods celebrated by lighting lamps throughout heaven — a festival that later came to be known as Dev Diwali, symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness and righteousness over evil.
Since both Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu played key roles in destroying evil and restoring cosmic balance on this day, their combined worship on Kartik Purnima is considered extremely auspicious. On this sacred occasion, a grand Tripurasura Samhara Puja and Shiva-Vishnu Sahasranama Path will be performed in Kashi.

It is believed that taking a holy dip in the Ganga during auspicious days purifies one’s karma and opens the path to liberation.
According to legend, Sage Bhagirath performed intense penance to bring the Ganga to Earth for the salvation of his ancestors. The river’s descent was so powerful that it could have destroyed the earth, so Bhagirath prayed to Lord Shiva. In compassion, Lord Shiva caught the Ganga in his matted locks, letting her gently flow down to Earth - earning him the name Gangadhara.
