Kaal Bhairav severed the fifth head of Brahma that had insulted Lord Shiva. However, the severed head remained stuck to Bhairav’s hand and would not separate. Lord Shiva then told Bhairav that he had incurred the sin of Brahma-hatya (killing a Brahmin). The only way to rid himself of this sin was to wander across the three worlds. The place where Brahma’s head would finally fall from his hand would grant him liberation from the sin.
It is believed that the head separated from Bhairav’s hand in Kashi, and there he attained freedom from the curse. After this, Lord Shiva appointed Kaal Bhairav as the Kotwal (chief guardian and protector) of Kashi. Devotees believe that worshipping Baba Kaal Bhairav here removes sorrows, evil influences, negative energies, obstacles, and sufferings.
