The Kalighat Temple, located in Kolkata, West Bengal, is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas in Hinduism and is considered a highly significant pilgrimage site. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Kali, revered as the deity of power, energy, and destruction. According to mythological tales, it is believed that here, the right toe of Goddess Sati fell when Lord Shiva was carrying her burnt body and performing the Tandava dance in grief. For this reason, this place is included among the extremely sacred 51 Shakti Peethas. The temple houses an idol of Goddess Kali in a fierce form, where she is seen standing with her right foot on Lord Shiva's chest, adorned with a garland of soft skulls around his neck, holding some axes and severed heads in her hands, with some skulls tied around her waist. Her tongue is protruding outward with drops of blood dripping from it, made of gold.
The current temple was constructed under the patronage of the Saborno Roychoudhury family & Babu Kaliproshad Dutto, with construction starting in 1798 and completing in 1809.
The Nav Durga Temple in Katra holds a very special place in every devotee's heart. Located on the sacred path to Mata Vaishno Devi, this temple is where pilgrims stop to seek blessings from all nine forms of Maa Durga before continuing their journey. The temple was established centuries ago when a divine light appeared at this spot during Navratri, and local devotees discovered nine naturally formed rock formations representing the Nav Durga. Each form of the Mother Goddess - from Shailputri to Siddhidatri - has her own shrine here, decorated with flowers and sindoor by thousands of devotees daily. What makes this temple even more powerful is its location in the holy town of Katra, which is considered the base camp of Mata Vaishno Devi's divine energy. The priests here perform special Navratri pujas using ancient Kashmiri traditions passed down through generations. Devotees believe that prayers offered here during Navratri reach directly to Maa Durga's divine abode, and she personally removes all obstacles and enemies from their lives.
