According to legend, Ravana performed intense penance to please Lord Shiva and received the Jyotirlinga as a boon. However, while carrying it to Lanka, he had to place it on the ground, and Lord Ganesha delayed him in disguise, causing the lingam to become permanently established there. This event marked the origin of Baidyanath Dham.
It is also believed that the heart of Goddess Sati fell here, making it one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, known as Jaya Chandi Peeth or Hriday Peeth. This is the only Jyotirlinga where both Shiva and Parvati are worshipped together.
The temple is known as Kamna Ling, believed to fulfill devotees’ wishes. During the month of Shravan, millions of pilgrims carry holy Ganga water for over 100 km on foot to perform Jalabhishek. The architecture reflects a blend of Nagar and Dravidian styles. The sanctum houses a small oval-shaped lingam, and the temple spire rises 72 feet high.
