That is why the Sanatan tradition considers Pitru Paksha the most sacred time to remember and honor ancestors.
The last and most important day of Pitru Paksha is Mahalaya Amavasya, also known as Sarva Pitru Amavasya. On this day, all ancestors whose death dates are unknown, or whose Shraddh was missed, can be honored through Tarpan and offerings. Scriptures state that rituals performed on this day can satisfy ancestors up to seven generations. Hence, Mahalaya Amavasya is considered an extremely auspicious occasion for Pitru Shanti and Moksha.
