On Mahalaya Amavasya, the closing day of Pitru Paksha, a special 3-Teertha Pitru Shanti Anushthan will be performed to seek relief from Pitru Dosha and invoke the blessings of the ancestors for peace and prosperity in the family.
Mahalaya Amavasya is considered an extremely important day for the peace and liberation of ancestors’ souls. On this day, rituals like Tarpan, Shraadh, and Pind Daan are performed to bring contentment to the ancestors’ souls. This day is also called Sarvapitri Amavasya or Pitru Moksha Amavasya, which is considered the most powerful. Ancestors whose Pitru Karyas were missed, or whose Tithi is unknown, can be offered peace on this day.
Ancestors, when not pleased, can create Pitru Dosha, causing obstacles and unrest in one’s life. Performing Pitru Shanti rituals on Mahalaya Amavasya is considered the best way to remove this Dosha. This year, Pitru Paksha is even more special because, according to astrology, this is a rare coincidence, taking place after many years, when both the beginning and the end of Pitru Paksha are occurring during eclipses.

Kashi, the city of liberation, is home to the sacred Pishach Mochan Kund, where, as per the Garuda Purana, performing Pind Daan ensures liberation and peace for ancestors.
Rameshwaram Ghat, where Lord Rama himself offered water oblations to his ancestors, is a historically significant place that reinstated the tradition of Shraddha.

Gokarna – Located on the coast of Karnataka, this tirtha is spiritually powerful. It's Kotitirtha, and the confluence with the Arabian Sea is especially sacred for ancestral rituals. According to belief, rituals performed here reach ancestors directly and aid in their spiritual progression. It is also connected to Ravana’s Atmalinga legend, further amplifying its spiritual significance.
Kashi – Known as the City of Liberation, the Pishach Mochan Kund is considered especially sacred for Pitru Shanti. As per the scriptures, performing rituals here fulfills the unsatisfied desires of ancestors and grants them ultimate peace. A legend speaks of a Brahmin trapped in a ghostly state who achieved salvation here through prayer and offerings to Lord Shiva, giving the Kund its name and importance.
Rameshwaram Ghat – This sacred land is tied to the Ramayana, where Lord Rama performed penance and Pind Daan after defeating Ravana. The Shiva Linga he worshipped still exists. Rituals done here, especially after holy dips in the temple tanks, cleanse sins and help liberate the departed.
