Long ago, King Bhagiratha performed years of intense penance with one prayer to bring Maa Ganga down from the heavens to free the souls of his 60,000 ancestors, who were reduced to ashes by the wrath of Sage Kapila. Maa Ganga agreed, but her force was so powerful it could have swallowed the Earth whole. Lord Shiva stepped in, catching her in his matted locks and letting her flow down gently.
