This is the sacred land where, after the great war of the Mahabharata, Dharmaraja Yudhishthira himself performed Pitru Tarpan at Brahma Sarovar. The Vamana Purana declares: "Seva performed at Brahma Sarovar on the day of the Surya Grahan yields the combined merit of 1,000 Ashwamedha Yajnas - and liberates one from the cycle of birth and death."

Mentioned in the Rig Veda and Srimad Bhagavata Purana as one of the Pancha Sarovars - the five most sacred lakes of Hinduism. This is the only tirtha on all of earth where Shraddh is performed exclusively for departed mothers - which is why it is called "Matru Gaya." Lord Parashuram searched the entire earth for a place to perform his mother's Matru Shraddh - and this was the sacred ground where he performed Pind Daan for her, where her soul received Moksha.
