According to Brahma Vaivarta Purana, Shani Dev was born to Goddess Chhaya, who, during her pregnancy, performed such intense penance and tapasya to Lord Shiva that her total absorption in devotion left its mark on the child she carried. Shani Dev was born with a deep complexion and that darkness became His identity and eternal signature in the cosmos.
