Pitri Paksha is a 16-day period in the Hindu calendar when people remember and honor their ancestors. It usually happens in September and is considered a time for performing Shraddha or Tarpana rituals to offer food and prayers to departed souls. It is believed that during this time, the souls of the past three generations come down from Pitriloka, the realm between heaven and earth, ruled by Lord Yama, the god of death. Offerings made during Pitri Paksha are believed to bring peace, happiness, and salvation (moksha) to the souls of ancestors. This period begins with Pratipada and ends with Sarvapitri Amavasya (also called Mahalaya Amavasya). According to the Mahabharata, this period was started when Karna returned to earth to donate food for his ancestors. People offer pind daan (rice balls), water, and other food items. It is said that if ancestors are happy with the offerings, they bless their descendants with health, wealth, and long life. It is also a reminder of one’s duty towards their family lineage. These rituals are especially important for sons, as per Hindu beliefs, to ensure peace for their ancestors’ souls. Pitri Paksha strengthens the bond between the past, present, and future generations.
