Naga Panchami is a traditional Hindu festival celebrated to worship snakes, especially cobras. It is observed on the fifth day of the bright half of the lunar month of Shravana (July or August). In some Indian states like Karnataka, Rajasthan, Bihar, and Gujarat, it is celebrated during the dark half of the same month. On this day, people offer prayers to snake deities made of silver, stone, wood, or paintings. These idols are given a holy bath with milk, and blessings are sought for the well-being of the family. In many places, even live snakes are worshipped with the help of snake charmers. The festival has roots in the Mahabharata, where a young sage named Astika stopped King Janamejaya from performing a fire sacrifice (Sarpa Satra) that aimed to kill all snakes. This sacrifice was to take revenge on the snake Takshaka, who had killed Janamejaya’s father. Astika’s request saved the serpent race, and since then, this day is observed as Naga Panchami. According to ancient texts like the Garuda Purana, worshipping snakes on this day brings good luck and prosperity. People also feed Brahmins as part of the rituals. The festival reflects respect for nature and ancient traditions.
