About Govardhan Puja

Govardhan Puja, also called Annakut or Annakoot, is a Hindu festival celebrated on the fourth day of Diwali. It falls on the first lunar day of the bright fortnight in the month of Kartika. On this day, devotees remember how Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan Hill to protect the people of Vrindavan from heavy rains sent by the rain god Indra. This act shows that God always protects his devotees who trust Him completely. To express gratitude, people worship Govardhan Hill and offer a mountain of food, known as Annakut, to Lord Krishna. Devotees prepare many types of vegetarian dishes, often 56 food items, called Chappan Bhog, and place them in front of Krishna. In villages, families also make a small model of the hill using cow dung, decorate it with toy cows and twigs, and offer prayers. In Braj, people walk around Govardhan Hill in a long parikrama (circle walk), covering around 11 miles. They visit shrines along the way and offer flowers and food. The rituals also include lighting lamps and singing devotional songs. Govardhan Puja is a joyful celebration of faith, protection, nature, and gratitude towards God for his blessings and care.
