About Ahoi Ashtami

Ahoi Ashtami is a Hindu festival celebrated about eight days before Diwali. It is observed on the eighth day (Ashtami Tithi) of the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha). In North India, it falls in the month of Kartik, while in other states like Gujarat and Maharashtra, it is in the month of Ashvin. Despite the difference in month names, the fast is observed on the same day across regions. This festival is dedicated to Ahoi Mata, who is believed to be a form of Goddess Lakshmi. Mothers observe a strict fast without food and water for the long life and well-being of their children. The fast is broken only after sighting the stars or the moon, depending on family tradition. Before sunset, women prepare for the puja by drawing the image of Ahoi Mata with eight corners (Ashta Koshthak) on the wall or cloth. The image often includes young children and a lion. A Kalash filled with water is placed at the place of worship, and a Karwa is kept on top. Sarai Seenka grass or cotton buds are used in the ritual. Traditional foods like 8 puris, 8 puas, and halwa are offered and later given to a Brahmin along with money.
