Learn the spiritual story behind Bhishma Panchak Fast, where devotees follow a five-day vow inspired by Bhishma Pitamah’s teachings to attain peace, devotion, and salvation.
During the time of the Mahabharata, the Pandavas achieved victory in the great war. After their triumph, Lord Krishna brought the Pandavas to Bhishma Pitamah, who was lying on his deathbed, waiting for the sun to transition into Uttarayan (the northern solstice). At Krishna's request, Bhishma shared his wisdom with the Pandavas over five days. He imparted teachings on Varn Dharma (duties based on one's class), Moksha Dharma (path to salvation), and Raj Dharma (principles of governance). After these teachings, Lord Krishna declared that these five days would be considered highly auspicious for the people and would henceforth be celebrated as Bhishma Panchak. These days are observed from Ekadashi (the 11th lunar day) to Purnima (the full moon).
