Learn the divine story of Bhishma Ashtami Fast, where devotees perform special rituals, offer tarpan for ancestors, and remember Bhishma Pitamah’s vow, devotion, and final teachings from the Mahabharata.
Bhishma Ashtami is closely linked to the later chapters of the Mahabharata. During the Kurukshetra war, Arjuna wounded Bhishma Pitamah, and he lay on a bed of arrows. Bhishma had the boon of "Ichha Mrityu," meaning he could choose the time of his death. He did not give up his life until the war ended. It is believed that Bhishma Pitamah remained on the bed of arrows for 18 days. Moments before his death, he shared important life lessons and values with Dharmaraj Yudhishthira. After fulfilling his duties, Bhishma left his mortal body. His unwavering dedication and devotion are honored through the celebration of Bhishma Ashtami. This day commemorates Bhishma’s values, teachings, and his devotion to dharma.
