Chaitra Amavasya Fast Story

Learn the holy story of Chaitra Amavasya Fast, a day devoted to honoring ancestors through rituals, prayers, and fasting for harmony, liberation, and inner purification.

Chaitra Amavasya Story

Chaitra Amavasya is considered an auspicious day for performing good deeds and resolving various doshas (flaws). In Hindu culture, the Amavasya of every month holds special significance, and Chaitra Amavasya is no exception. Here's the story associated with this vrat (fast).

The Story: Once upon a time, a king ruled over a city with happiness prevailing among his subjects and family. The queen was very religious, and the king’s closest friend was a wealthy merchant who lived in a mansion across from the palace. One day, the merchant’s son passed away, and the merchant's wife's wailing echoed throughout the city. Hearing her cries, the queen asked the king about the reason for her sorrow. Upon learning the story, the queen asked the king, “What is sorrow?” The king replied, “You will understand sorrow when our son dies.” Shocked, the queen immediately threw her son from the palace, but he was miraculously saved by divine grace. The queen again asked the king, “What is sorrow?” The king replied that he would soon go to war with a neighboring kingdom, and when news of his death arrived, she would understand sorrow. However, because the queen observed the Amavasya fast, the king returned victorious. Confused, the queen repeated her question. This time, the king declared, “We will visit the Ganges. When I jump into the river, you will finally know what sorrow is.” As this conversation unfolded, Lord Shiva, observing from Mount Kailash, said to Goddess Parvati, “Let me show you a soul who remains happy in life.” The divine couple took the form of a goat and a sheep and descended to Earth. Near a stepwell, Shiva and Parvati, grazing as animals, began to converse. The queen overheard Shiva saying, “Because the queen observes the Amavasya fast, she will never have to face sorrow in her life.” Hearing this, the queen finally understood the power of the Amavasya vrat.
