Neelkanth Mahadev Temple, Etawah

Located in the heart of Etawah city, in the Lalpura area of Uttar Pradesh, the Neelkanth Mahadev Temple is an ancient and miraculous abode of Lord Shiva. Devotees believe that whoever comes here empty-handed returns blessed, for Lord Neelkanth fulfills everyone’s wishes. About 150 years ago, when this area was covered with dense forests and people feared coming here even during the day, a marble Shiva Linga was found inside a well while searching for stolen goods. The Shiva Linga had a unique bluish color, and devotees considered it a symbol of Neelkanth Mahadev. It was installed on the spot, and thus the foundation of the temple was laid. Since then, the place has become a strong center of Shiva devotion, and its grandeur has continued to grow. Around 40 years ago, Swami Nepali Baba took up the responsibility of beautifying and developing the temple. Under his guidance, the old brick flooring was replaced with marble, and several shrines dedicated to different deities were constructed in the temple complex. These include idols and temples of Lord Ganesha (with family), Goddess Kali, Radha-Krishna, Saraswati, Gauri-Shankar, Shri Ram Darbar, Sai Baba, Shani Dev, Hanumanji, Vishnu-Lakshmi, and Goddess Durga. Swami Nepali Baba attained Samadhi on 19 May 2005. In his memory, a statue was installed that can be viewed from all directions around the temple. Additionally, a temple of Panchmukhi Hanumanji and the revered deity of the Maheshwari community, Baba Khetarpal, was also built in the premises. Because of this, the number of devotees from different communities continues to increase. Today, devotees come not only from Etawah but also from cities like Kanpur, Gwalior, and Farrukhabad to seek blessings here. The Neelkanth Mahadev Temple has now become a living symbol of faith, peace, and spiritual power.

The architecture of Neelkanth Mahadev Temple follows the traditional style of Shiva temples. The Shiva Linga located in the sanctum is considered ancient and spiritually powerful. The temple complex also includes an old well, a courtyard surrounded by large trees, and a dedicated Yagyashala for religious rituals. Recently, the Uttar Pradesh government included the temple in its tourism development plan. With a budget of ₹2 crore, restoration and beautification work is being carried out rapidly, making the temple more organized, clean, and attractive for visitors.

The temple remains open daily from 5:00 AM to 9:00 PM. Special morning and evening aartis are performed, attracting a large number of devotees. During Sawan and Mahashivratri, all-night jagrans, Rudrabhishek, and special pujas are held. At these times, the temple premises witness massive crowds of devotees.

Prasad offered at the temple includes Panchmeva, coconuts, sweets, and bhang-dhatura. After the puja, devotees may also perform a special Rudrabhishek, offering cow’s milk, ghee, honey, pure water, and bel leaves to Lord Shiva. On major occasions, a Bhandara is organized where free satvik meals are served to all.

By Train Etawah Railway Station, on the North Central Railway route, is well-connected with major cities like Delhi, Lucknow, Agra, and Kanpur. The temple is about 5 km from the station, and autos, e-rickshaws, and taxis are easily available. By Bus Regular UPSRTC buses operate to Etawah. The temple is around 6 km from the Etawah Bus Depot, with e-rickshaws and local taxis available. By Air The nearest airports are: Agra Airport – 120 km

From these airports, taxis and buses are available to reach Etawah. The city is expected to get improved air connectivity in the near future.
