It is said that in the 11th century, King Hamirdev saw and preserved it. He then established the town of Hamirpur around this tree. Nearby, there is a Bhadra Kali temple, where visiting is considered auspicious. Many devotees also come here to perform Kalpavas (spiritual retreats).

During the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean), among the 14 treasures that emerged, one was this Kalpavriksha. Legend says that Lord Krishna brought it from Indralok (heaven) to Earth to fulfill the worship of his wife, Satyabhama.
