Baleshwar Temple

Baleshwar Temple is a historically rich and spiritually significant temple located in Champawat, Uttarakhand. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple is an architectural marvel spread across 200 square metres and lies just 100 metres from the Champawat main bus stand. It stands as one of the most revered religious tourism spots in the Kumaon region.

History of Baleshwar Temple

Built by the rulers of the Chand dynasty, the Baleshwar Temple is a masterpiece of ancient stone carving. Though exact dates of its construction are debated, inscriptions found on-site trace its origin to around 1272 CE. The temple is believed to have been constructed between the 10th and 12th centuries. According to legend, during the time of the Mahabharata, Lord Bali worshipped Lord Shiva here for peace and prosperity, leading to the temple being named "Baleshwar" (Bali’s Ishwar). In 1420 CE, King Dhyan Chand is said to have renovated the temple to atone for the sins of his father. Folklore tells of a time when villagers discovered a hidden Shivling in the forest. A cow had mysteriously stopped giving milk, and upon investigation, the villagers found it offering milk at a specific spot in the jungle. That night, the cow’s owner had a dream in which Lord Shiva revealed the presence of the lingam. This divine event prompted the building of the temple.

The Baleshwar Temple holds deep cultural and spiritual importance. Listed among Uttarakhand’s protected heritage sites, it is a symbol of the faith of the local population. Major festivals such as Mahashivratri and Sawan draw thousands of devotees here. An interesting aspect of the temple is the rotating trident (Trishul) atop the temple’s dome, which is said to move in alignment with the sun’s position throughout the day—a phenomenon that continues to fascinate devotees

Architecture of the Baleshwar Temple

Baleshwar Temple is known for its remarkable stone architecture. It features intricate carvings made of blue and green granite. The outer walls are adorned with images of Hindu gods such as Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, and other deities. Apart from the main shrine, the temple complex also houses two other shrines: Ratneshwar Temple Champavati Temple, dedicated to Goddess Durga There are several Shiva lingams across the complex, but the main lingam, made of crystal, is believed to be miraculous and holds a special place in the hearts of devotees.
