The temple’s fame extends beyond India, as mentioned by the famous Chinese traveler Hiuen Tsang (Xuanzang) in his travel accounts. The history of Dudheshwar Nath Temple spans several centuries. It is associated with the Satasi State of Rudrapur, founded by King Vashishth Sen, who constructed the temple and personally performed regular worship. The Shiva Lingam here is considered Swayambhu (self-manifested) and is believed to be made of Neelask Stone. It is a sub-ling of Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, as described in the Padma Purana: "Mahakalasya yallingaṃ Dugdheshamiti vishrutam" The temple is also mentioned in the Gorakhpur Gazetteer by Alexander and by Hiuen Tsang during his travels in India. It is believed that after the establishment of the twelve Jyotirlingas, other subsidiary lingams were installed, with Baba Dudheshwar Nath considered among the first. The region also served as the tapasthali (meditation site) for sages Dadhichi and Garg, enhancing the temple’s spiritual aura and divine experience.

The temple is built in an octagonal style and spreads across approximately 20 acres. The Shiva Lingam is located about 15 feet below ground level, requiring devotees to descend 14 steps to touch it. The Lingam is considered mysterious and miraculous. The temple complex includes a beautiful pond, resting areas, a Yagya Shala (ritual hall), and multiple smaller Shiva Lingams. There are 11 other ancient Shiva Lingams in the Saptkosi region, making it a complete Shiva pilgrimage site. During Shravan and Adhik Maas (extra lunar month), the area becomes a hub of Shiva worship, attracting thousands of devotees.

The temple is open daily from 3:00 AM to 11:00 PM. Special aartis are held at 4:00 AM in the morning and at sunset in the evening. During festivals such as Maha Shivaratri, Shravan Maas, Phalgun Maas, and Adhik Maas, special ceremonies are organized. On Maha Shivaratri in Phalgun Maas, millions of devotees gather for Jalabhishek (water rituals). Devotees also visit year-round for personal wishes and blessings.

Devotees offer bilva leaves, datura, ak (Calotropis), coconut, milk, fruits, and sweets to Lord Shiva. The tradition of offering milk is especially popular during Shravan and other auspicious months, believed to fulfill devotees' wishes. The temple also regularly organizes Bhandaras (community meals), where pure, sattvic food is distributed as prasad to devotees.

By Train: Deoria City Railway Station is the main station, connected directly to Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Lucknow, Delhi, and other cities. The temple in Rudrapur is about 25 km from the station, reachable by auto or taxi. By Bus: UPSRTC (Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation) buses operate regularly from Deoria, Gorakhpur, Ballia, Azamgarh, and other nearby cities. Local transport from Deoria Bus Station can take you directly to the temple. By Air: The nearest airport is Gorakhpur Airport, approximately 50 km from Rudrapur. From there, you can reach Deoria via taxi or bus. Another option is Varanasi Airport, which, though farther, offers better connectivity.
