According to the scriptures, Chandra Dev (God of the Moon) undertook the intense penance of Lord Shiva at this sacred site to free himself from the curse of his father-in-law Daksha Prajapati. To commemorate this event and seek liberation from the curse, he established a self-illuminating shiva lingam, which is now known as the Somnath Jyotirlinga. Since Chandra Dev is also known as Soma, this Jyotirlinga is commonly referred to as Somnath.
From a geographical perspective, Somnath holds a unique significance. It is believed that from Somnath, there is an uninterrupted sea route to the South Pole, making it an extraordinary navigational reference. No land masses interrupt this route until the South Pole.
