According to the scriptures, this is the only festival where the Sun is offered Arghya (water offering) in the evening, known as Sandhya Arghya. During this time, the Sun resides with his wife, Pratyusha, and therefore, offering to Pratyusha brings benefits. It is said that worshiping the Sun in the evening brings prosperity into one’s life. The following day, on the seventh day, the worship concludes with an Arghya to the Sun during the morning, known as Paran. It is believed that performing this ritual fulfills all desires of the devotees. If this festival is celebrated at a holy site like the Deo Surya Temple in Aurangabad, Bihar, its significance increases manifold. In this temple, Lord Surya is present in all three forms: Udayachal (morning Sun), Madhyachal (noon Sun), and Astachal (evening Sun). It is said to be the only Sun temple in the country that faces west instead of east. The presence of the Surya Kund here adds to the significance of the Chhath festival; it is believed that anyone who performs Chhath here will attain their desired results. There is another interesting story behind the west facing of the Devark temple, in which it is told that a robber named Kalapahad reached Deo while destroying the temples. The priests of the temple prayed to him not to destroy this temple as it was of great importance. Kalapahad placed a condition that if the temple changes its direction, he will not destroy it. For this reason, the face of the temple turned towards the west. The architecture of the Deo Temple built in Nagara style is worth seeing. The Shikhara, Amalaka, and sanctum of the temple makes it a unique example of Indian temple architecture. It is believed that no seeker has ever returned empty-handed from this temple. After receiving their desired blessings, they offer Arghya to Surya Dev during the Chhath Puja in the months of Kartik or Chaitra.
